Eight Ways To Slash Your Auto Insurance Cost

The insurance rates you pay for your car can vary dramatically depending on:

  • The insurance company, agent and broker you choose.
  • The coverage you request.
  • The kind of car you drive.

Here is a list of suggestions to help you lower your car insurance rates:

  1. Choose the right Car.
For lower insurance rates, the right car is a safer car.  Avoid high performance cars.  Choose smaller engine versions of the "sporty" models or four door sedans or wagons.  Mid-size 4-door cars such as the Accord  or Camry generally provide grater crash protection and tend to suffer lower collision losses, which usually means lower insurance premiums.
  2. Buy cars with safety gear.
Airbags, approved alarm systems and anti-lock brakes may reduce your auto insurance rates.
  3. Keep your driving record clean.
Don't speed or drink and drive. Always wear your seat belt.  You may qualify for a reduced premium if you have no claims or tickets for 36 months.  Drivers over the age of 50 with a clean record may also claim a rate reduction.
  4. Low miles per year discounts
Drivers who hold their driving below 7500 miles a year generally qualify for a discount.  Lessening or eliminating your use of a car to commute everyday can reduce your premium.
  5. Choose a higher deductible
Paying for the insurance you need is expensive enough, so don't waste your money on coverage you don't need.  You can cut your premiums by raising you policy's deductible.  Some companies are now offering disappearing deductibles--the more years you go without an accident the lower your deductible becomes. Be aware though, that the disappearing deductible usually doesn't apply to the glass breakage.
  6. Encourage your teens to get good student discounts.
Insurers will usually provide a good student discount if the teenage driver in your home maintains a good academic record, which is usually a 3.0 GPA or better grade average for a full time student.
  7. Insure all your cars, RVs and your home with the same company.
Today it makes sense to insure all your cars, RVs, etc. on a single policy to get a multi-vehicle discount.  Many companies offer a significant auto discount if you also insure your home with them.
  8. Choose the right insurance company.
The right insurance company is one that does all the right things from coverage options, claims service, repairs, to follow-through and guarantee.  Auto insurance premiums vary from company to company and state to state, so start in the right place- look for an insurance company that's highly rated by A. M. Best Company, the nation's leading insurance rating authority.
